EBDUG #9: Backdrop - A Drupal Fork

Oct 30 2013, 6:30pm to 8:30pm PDT

Nathan Haug and Jen Lampton

Jen LamptonBackdrop is a fork of Drupal.  It is intended to be a full-featured content management system that allows non-technical users to manage a wide variety of content. Backdrop will be feature-comparable with Drupal 8 (containing things like CMI, WYSIWYG & Views in core), but will be built on APIs more similar to those found in Drupal 7.

We're excited to have Backdrop founders Nate Haug and Jen Lampton live and in-person for the October EBDUG meeting.  Join us on Oct 30 (just after BADCamp) at the usual time (6:30 PM) in our usual location, Tech Liminal in downtown Oakland -- just 2 blocks from the 12th St. BART station.

Why fork Drupal? Because there's a cost that comes with change.  Drupal 8 is changing many underlying architectural features that Drupal developers have learned how to use over the last decade.  While there are very solid reasons for these changes, many new concepts are being introduced at once. There is a considerable danger that this might prove to be a substantial barrier to many existing Drupal developers.

Backdrop is intended to be a home for developers and users who might otherwise consider adopting other platforms. The goal of the project is to provide shiny new features built on an iteration of the existing Drupal 7 APIs: before Symfony, PSR-0, and the "Drupal Kernel".

You can read more over at http://backdropcms.org/.  Then bring your questions to EBDUG #9 and get them answered by the project founders themselves!  You don't want to miss this.
